Cathy, this is so well done! I can relate as I had trigger thumb on my right hand for about a year and a half that threw off my ability to do many simple things and at times had me alternating between laughing, frustration and upset. It inspired a post eventually about gratitude with humor as well.
I hope you mend quickly. I just subscribed and look forward to more of your work very soon.
Thank you, Melanie, for the wonderful compliment and for sharing this. Please feel free to add a link here to your post on this. I’d love to read it. Also, thanks so much for becoming a subscriber! I appreciate it.
I hope you find out nature was the right way! In a similar horse story, my husband tore his Achilles on day 2 of a week long trip to Puerto Rico. He ended up out of work on disability for 2 months (at 50yo this was his first time collecting disability or unemployment) and decided while he was out he’d pass the time by learning to play the guitar. 6 months later he owned 4 guitars 🎸🎸🎸🎸🤦♀️. 14 months later he still plays every single day. In 23 years tog he never once mentioned wanting to learn to play the guitar. Who’s yo say what’s good and what’s bad? 🤷🏼♀️
Oh my goodness, Cathy! What an experience. It sounds so painful! I trust you were on some heavy pain meds! I hope it works out w/o the surgery. Please keep us posted. Hugs.
May I say Cathy - I share your pain! On November 1, 2017 , one month after retiring as a nurse, I tripped on a curb and dislocated my shoulder! As I laid on the cold ground - I knew something was very wrong!
It was my husband’s birthday and I was rushing to go into a shop in Dartmouth Crossing to get him a new Tilly hat!
Many people were all around me so I encouraged him to go purchase it. Naturally he refused.
It felt like an eternity for the ambulance to arrive!
A painful trip to the Dartmouth General and an even more painful attempt for the orthopedist to try to reduce ( put in back in place ) it, without any medication then ensued!
I tried to be brave , but it wasn’t going to happen without something to relax me.
Once they have me an some I/V medication,
In minutes my shoulder was back in the socket.
I wasn’t allowed to drive for several weeks- I had Christmas shopping and wrapping and baking to do!!’
It was a long , very long recovery. The doctor mentioned possible surgery because of the injury- he could see some broken pieces in the X-ray. He consulted a senior surgeon and I consulted Dr. Google- surgery was not usually helpful in this type of injury. Luckily the senior surgeon agreed!
Unfortunately, even now- my shoulder can ache depending on how I’ve been using it.
My poor husband had to drive me to do my shopping and he put the gifts in bags to avoid wrapping and we bought treats to have at Christmas time!
You know - we never did but that Tilly Hat!
Hang in there my friend - it could have been so much worse! The wave could have carried you out to sea…. Oops!
Wow, that sounds way worse than what I endured, Heather. Yikes. But the part in common was the awesome husband part.💕 Ralph has been amazing and I know being chief cook, bottlewasher and caretaker is getting very old very fast!😉
Wow, Cathy!! To begin with, I am just glad you are ok and back at home in your familiar setting getting the care you need! I would have been scared! I hope everything heals naturally!!
Also, what a beautifully written piece! So much humor woven into your story! I appreciate hearing it!
Sending you so much love and quickly healing!! xo k
Such a wonderful, funny, charming piece to remind us that life has a way of providing us with learning opportunities cloaked in many different clothings. And seeing through that with humour and grace is a gift!
First of all, I was sorry to hear you were injured (especially on vacation) but the creation of this piece of writing is an example of something negative turning into something wonderful. So many fabulous points made here. Here's to a smooth and speedy recovery and hopefully a late spring coffee date!
Thank you, Gina, for your wonderful review😉❤️ I thought about inviting readers to share their toilet bowl stories but I was too afraid.😉 Fishing out a cellphone would be even worse, I think! lol!
What an experience! I'm so glad you're okay, Cathy, and I really enjoyed this lively story. Perfect comparison.
Thank you, Robin. I appreciate you sharing in the adventure with me.

Sounds wonderful, Sue. Thank you for being here!
Entertaining and enlightening, both, Cathy. Love the lessons learned and finding silver linings. Xo

What a brilliant blog and even hilarious in places! When writing comedy, they say tragedy + time = humour. You nailed it.
I felt for you in the ER debacle, but laughed with you when you found the humour in it (maybe because I did the same with my cell phone. Yuck)
There were also important life lessons (too enormous to list); and each one gave me pause to think.
And to punctuate the whole thing with a Katie Byron quote, "loving what is" was perfect. Well done.
Love the lessons that adversity teaches. I hope the journey back to health is full of richness! ❤️
Thank you.
